The Department of Hunting reminds hunters of the need to respect areas where the activity is banned, designated tracks and the natural environment, in order to protect biodiversity and avoid infringements

The Cabildo de Fuerteventura is calling on everyone who hunts on the island to carry out the activity responsibly and with respect for the environment, the land and current regulations. The Department of Hunting points out that compliance with the rules and respect for natural areas are essential in order to reconcile hunting with the conservation of biodiversity.

Respecting areas where hunting is banned

One of the main restrictions is the need to respect areas where hunting is not permitted. The activity is banned in a number of natural sites, including the Islote de Lobos Natural Park, the Corralejo Natural Park, the Tindaya and Ajuy natural monuments, the Jable de Jandía within the Jandía Natural Park, and the Playa del Matorral Site of Scientific Interest in Morro Jable.

Hunting is also prohibited in the General Use Zones of the Betancuria Rural Park, the Madre del Agua Refuge and Castillo de Lara, as well as in certain restricted, traditional and general use zones of the Malpaís Grande Protected Landscape, in the Restricted Use Zone of the Montaña Cardón Natural Monument, the Lajares Refuge, the Tesjuate Lagoon and the Cercado del Jarde in Antigua. All these zones, along with the various restrictions, are set out in the 2026 Hunting Order.

Hunting is also banned in all training grounds, with safety zones established around feeding points for protected species, known locally as muladares, as well as in the historical research site next to the Punta de Goma training ground.

Caring for the land

The Department also stresses the importance of keeping to the tracks designated for vehicle use and avoiding parking off the tracks or in unauthorised spots. It also calls for particular care to be taken around ethnographic features found across the island, such as the stone walls found in various areas.

Such practices can have an impact on the landscape and biodiversity, which is why the Cabildo is stressing the need for hunting to be carried out responsibly and with respect for the surroundings.

The Councillor for Hunting, Carlos Rodríguez, said: “Hunting must always be carried out with respect for the land and the natural value of Fuerteventura. Observing the areas where the activity is banned, keeping to designated tracks and avoiding any impact on the environment are basic requirements for ensuring responsible practice that is compatible with the conservation of our biodiversity.”

The councillor also pointed out that “the rules are there to protect our natural spaces, and also to ensure that hunting can continue to take place in the future.”

The island council also points out that poor practices, such as hunting out of season, using banned methods or exceeding established bag limits, not only put the natural balance at risk but can also constitute offences carrying penalties.

Full details of hunting zones, restrictions and applicable regulations can be found in the 2026 Hunting Order:https://www.cabildofuer.es/cabildo/areas-tematicas/caza/temporada-de-caza-2026/

The Cabildo has also made available to hunters the Hunter’s Manual, which sets out recommendations and good practice for carrying out this activity responsibly, available here: https://www.cabildofuer.es/cabildo/areas-tematicas/caza/el-buen-cazador/
