Storyteller Diego Rienfield, from Tenerife, delighted audiences last Friday, 9 October, at the Escuelas Viejas in Antigua, as part of the sixth edition of Candil de Cuentos de Antigua. The Mayor of Antigua, Juan Cabrera, highlighted the strong turnout for this cultural event, now a benchmark on the island. The Councillor for Culture, Agustín Rodríguez, announced that three more sessions remain, to be held on Fridays throughout the month. “The quality of this year’s programme deserves special mention, with some truly professional artists taking part.”
Under the title Miedo de andar por casa (“Everyday Fear”), Rienfield explored how fear has become so ingrained in our daily lives that we no longer stop to think about it, to reflect on it, or to look it in the eye. “Fear has become so commonplace that it’s treated as something trivial, hardly worth noticing.”
Rienfield made the point, aptly, that this is what stories are for: to stop time and shed light on small details, to restore our sense of wonder and dread. The director of Candil de Cuentos, GemaGe, announced that on 16 October the artist Yureyna Santana will take part with the show ‘La mejor escuela’.
It should be noted that last Friday’s venue was changed due to rain, as the event’s usual home is the courtyard of the ‘El Portón’ Municipal Library.
