- Mayor Juan Cabrera announces that the original lighting of this sculptural work, designed by artist Pepe Melián, has been repainted and restored as a cultural symbol of the future and modernity.
The Antigua local government has announced that the historic Millennium Fountain, a work by local artist Pepe Melián, has now been restored within the first hundred days of the new administration. This sculptural piece, created in 2000, had fallen into serious disrepair, and one of the new government’s commitments was to repair it and restore it to its former splendour.
The mayor and councillor for Public Works and Services at Antigua Town Council, Juan Cabrera, said: “We have restored all of the original lighting, repainted the sculpture and given it a general clean-up. We have also repaired the water pump system so that it works perfectly this summer and looks its very best.”
The fountain has become a symbol of the town of Antigua, being the first monument that residents and tourists see as they arrive in the village.
“As soon as I took office, I announced that I wanted this fountain repaired so that it would work perfectly and offer the best possible image of our municipality, given that this piece represents the future, the dawn of the second millennium, and is a symbol of our town’s modernity,” said Mayor Juan Cabrera. “We owe a great deal of gratitude to the artist Pepe Melián, who has enriched the town of Antigua with his designs and art, capturing our culture and identity,” Juan Cabrera concluded.
