The 2026-2027 Neuromajo season has already held its Word Race. For the first time, this event was held separately from the main competition weekend, touring all of Fuerteventura’s municipalities between 2 and 8 October.
The Word Race is a cognitive stimulation and mental agility competition. Participants face various challenges designed to exercise memory, concentration and logical or linguistic problem-solving skills.
The Neuromajo project is run by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura’s Department of Social Action together with the Asociación Neurolímpica, with the involvement of all six town councils. Through a collaboration agreement, this year Padilla Supermercados Spar, Grupo Barceló and Dany Sport have also joined, helping to promote active ageing among older people.
Beyond the competition itself, the main aim is to create a social environment that prevents loneliness, strengthens friendship and highlights the life experience of older people.
This season sees a total of 18 teams taking part: Las Elegidas and Imparables (Antigua), Virgen de la Peña (Betancuria), Las Guirre, Las Lobas and La Tahona (La Oliva), L@s Atrevid@s, Cofete, Faro, Amigos de Pájara, Pájara se Mueve and Playas de Pájara (Pájara), Las Apañás, Las Baifas, Maxopuerto and Los Picarones (Puerto del Rosario), and Camellito and Las Moriscas (Tuineje).
The Cabildo has confirmed that the opening street parade will take place on Friday 16 October from 5.00pm in Caleta de Fuste (Antigua), while the rest of the competition will be held at the Playitas Sports Resort on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October, starting at 10.30am, with a qualifying round, finals and a closing ceremony.
To round off the season, Fuerteventura’s Palacio de Formación y Congresos (Puerto del Rosario) will host the Neuromajo 2026 Gala in February 2027, celebrating the effort made throughout the season.
Both the president of the Cabildo, Lola García, and the Councillor for Social Action, Víctor Alonso, expressed their pride in running the Neuromajo project for another year and thanked the coaches, the Asociación Neurolímpica, the six town councils, collaborating organisations and all participants for taking part in an initiative that promotes an active lifestyle for older people in Fuerteventura.
