The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through the Department of Crafts, has successfully completed the aboriginal and traditional pottery workshop that has developed since last June, within the project for the recovery and dissemination of crafts ‘EnRedarte’.
The workshop was given by the ceramic artisan José Luis Aradas, at the Cultural Center of Tetir, and also included a talk by the master potter Silverio López. Last week the workshop came to an end with the presentation of diplomas and the process of firing the ceramic pieces directly on the fire, following the traditional method.
The Councilor for Crafts, Lolina Negrin, has put in value the workshops of ‘EnRedArte’, “which are an effective tool to ensure the continuity of different types of crafts that are part of our collective identity”. In this case, the traditional pottery, “which is included within the manifestations of our culture, with skills and techniques that are integrated into the intangible heritage of Fuerteventura and the Canary Islands”.
This is a craft practice that, for centuries, was key to providing society with objects for everyday use. With a theoretical-practical approach, the students learned about the evolution of this tradition, from the techniques used by the aboriginal population. Topics covered included obtaining and preparing the clay, the use of traditional tools, modeling, decoration and direct firing.
