The island council’s plenary session has today approved the project, which includes a signal-controlled pedestrian crossing, new signage and street lighting
The plenary session of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura has approved the project to improve the FV-20 road where it passes through the village of Agua de Bueyes, in the municipality of Antigua. The works, with a base budget of almost €300,000, will shortly go out to tender.
The island president, Lola García, highlighted the importance of improving the island’s road network, “because it has a positive impact on the quality of life of people in Fuerteventura”. “The Cabildo has allocated a total of €16 million to improving more than 120 kilometres of the island’s road network, with key projects such as the Lajares crossing or the one approved today to improve road safety and accessibility for pedestrians and vehicles on the FV-20 as it passes through Agua de Bueyes.”
García also stressed the coordination with town councils, in this case Antigua, on a scheme being driven forward by the Roads Department (Consejería de Carreteras), led by Blas Acosta. This stretch of road currently lacks a regulated pedestrian crossing and a continuous accessible route, making this intervention necessary. A significant increase in the average daily traffic flow has also been recorded, exceeding 5,000 vehicles according to data from the area’s traffic counting station.
For all these reasons, it is necessary to install a regulated pedestrian crossing with a traffic light system incorporating speed reducers, improving traffic flow while protecting pedestrians along the entire crossing. The project also includes safe pedestrian routes, improved road signage, street lighting, drainage work and the reconstruction of retaining walls on the adjoining land.
