The new lighting, which is self-sufficient and uses LED technology, improves visibility and safety on the road without needing a connection to the electricity grid, while paying special attention to protecting Fuerteventura’s night sky.
Puerto del Rosario Town Council has strengthened lighting along the FV-20 branch road with the installation of ten new photovoltaic street lamps, an initiative that improves visibility and safety conditions on a road used daily by local residents and other users.
The new lamps operate completely independently thanks to solar power. During the day, their photovoltaic panels capture and store the energy needed to power the lighting system at night, removing the need for a connection to the conventional electricity grid.
The project also incorporates LED technology, providing an efficient lighting system suited to the characteristics of the surrounding area. Particular attention has been paid to protecting the night sky, one of Fuerteventura’s key natural assets and one of the factors underpinning the island’s recognition as a Starlight Reserve.
The work on the FV-20 branch road follows on from the recent installation of photovoltaic street lamps along the extension of Calle Los Camelleros. The two projects reflect the gradual rollout of renewable-energy-based lighting solutions across various parts of the municipality.
The mayor of Puerto del Rosario, David de Vera, said: “The installation of these new street lamps addresses a specific need for those who use this road, improving both lighting and safety, while doing so through a solution based on solar power that respects our surroundings. We want the improvement of public services to go hand in hand with sustainability and the protection of our sky.”
For his part, the Councillor for Municipal Services, David de León, highlighted that “these ten new lamps represent a direct improvement for those travelling along the FV-20 branch road. We are introducing technology that allows us to light these areas independently and efficiently, making the most of Fuerteventura’s natural conditions and bearing in mind the importance of preserving our night sky.”
The ten street lamps are fitted with photovoltaic panels, an energy storage system and LED technology, enabling them to generate and store during daylight hours the energy they need to operate at night.
With this initiative, Puerto del Rosario Town Council continues its ongoing efforts to improve public lighting, increase safety on municipal roads and introduce renewable energy solutions, balancing the provision of public services with the protection of Fuerteventura’s environmental and scenic value.
