The measure aims to address the extra costs facing Fuerteventura’s small-scale fishing sector
The Cabildo de Fuerteventura is doubling the financial support it provides to the island’s fishermen’s associations (cofradías), raising it to €120,000, with the aim of addressing the extra costs facing Fuerteventura’s small-scale fishing sector.
The president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Lola García, conveyed the news to representatives of the three majorero fishermen’s associations (Corralejo, Morro Jable and Gran Tarajal) at a meeting also attended by the Councillor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Enrique Pérez, and the Councillor for Finance and Economic Promotion, Nuria Cabrera.
As a result, the island authority is increasing each of the agreements it holds with the fishermen’s associations (Corralejo, Morro Jable and Gran Tarajal) by €20,000, bringing the total to €120,000 shared between the three organisations. According to the island president, “this increase will allow professionals to cope with the extra costs of purchasing fuel, a demand the associations themselves had raised with us.”
Lola García highlighted “the key role played by the primary sector and small-scale fishing in the majorera economy. It is a sector that suffers significant limitations due to our double insularity and our status as an outermost region, difficulties which are being made worse by the current international crisis.”
For the Councillor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Enrique Pérez, “it is important to strengthen the resilience of the primary sector, our most traditional industry and part of our identity, in this case by tackling the difficulties facing the fishing industry due to the extra costs of fuel.”
Both Lola García and Enrique Pérez also highlighted the Cabildo’s contingency plan worth more than €5 million, aimed at ensuring the competitiveness of agricultural, livestock and fishing activity, through general grant calls, targeted subsidies and subsidised agricultural water rates.
