The training will take place between September and November in Betancuria, La Oliva, Puerto del Rosario and Gran Tarajal
The Cabildo de Fuerteventura, through its Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, together with GDR Maxorata, is promoting four training courses on ‘Animal welfare in the transport of live animals’, aimed at the livestock sector and designed to improve knowledge and practices relating to animal welfare during transport.
The courses will run for 20 hours each and will be held between September and November in four municipalities across the island. The training will be delivered by José Luis García Gómez Nieves, a qualified veterinarian, and meets the content and minimum duration requirements set out in current regulations on animal welfare during transport.
The first edition will take place on 21, 22, 23 and 24 September at the Centro Polivalente del Valle de Santa Inés, in Betancuria. The second will run on 5, 6, 7 and 8 October at the Centro Cultural Raíz del Pueblo, in La Oliva. The third will be held from 19 to 22 October at the Palacio de Congresos in Puerto del Rosario, and the fourth, from 3 to 6 November, at the Cooperativa Agrícola de Gran Tarajal, in Tuineje. All sessions will run from 4.00pm to 9.00pm.
The Councillor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Enrique Pérez, highlighted the Cabildo de Fuerteventura’s commitment to “training that responds to the needs of the livestock sector and helps improve animal welfare and practices linked to livestock transport”.
These initiatives form part of the grants for the Local Action Group GDR Maxorata’s own projects for the 2026-2027 period, within the Participatory Local Development Strategy for the island of Fuerteventura, corresponding to Intervention 7119 of the PEPAC 2023-2027.
Co-financed expenditure is distributed as follows: 80% through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), 6% from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAPA), and 14% from the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Directorate-General for Agriculture.
The Cabildo de Fuerteventura’s Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries also co-finances GDR Maxorata’s management and running costs, reinforcing its commitment to training in the island’s primary sector and supporting its role as a collaborating body with the Directorate-General for Agriculture of the Government of the Canary Islands in managing rural development aid (Leader).
