The Cabildo de Fuerteventura will award Lorenza Machín the 2026 Alexis Ravelo Prize, a recognition that highlights her cultural career and her enduring commitment to creativity, literature, the performing arts and the defence of a more equal and diverse society.
With this award, the island institution wishes to recognise a woman who has built a career deeply linked to Fuerteventura and its cultural life, and who for decades has used words, performance and artistic creation as tools to tell stories, raise awareness and give visibility to social realities.
The 2026 Alexis Ravelo Prize will be presented to Lorenza Machín on Friday, 16 October, at 8.00pm, as part of the Fuerteventura Book Fair programme.
Lorenza Machín is a writer, poet, actress and social activist. Her career includes appearances in theatre productions, monologues, short films and feature films, in addition to her literary work. Her output has been especially linked to the defence of women’s rights and efforts to give visibility to diversity.
Lorenza Machín’s literary career is closely linked to Fuerteventura and to the island institution itself. Among her earliest publications is El jardincillo encantado, published by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura in 2012, a work that forms part of the author’s literary output.
Alongside El jardincillo encantado are other works such as Tres nanas and Anarán, also published in 2012, Aurora Ocaso (2017) and Caminando. Antología (2021). The Biblioteca de Canarias currently includes these works as part of her career as a writer.
For the president of the Cabildo, Lola García, and the Councillor for Culture, Rayco León, it is important to recognise a career that forms part of Fuerteventura’s cultural memory, as well as her way of understanding culture as a space for self-expression, for questioning, for generating thought and for helping others feel represented.
Rayco León noted that “the Alexis Ravelo Prize has a feature we consider fundamental: it recognises those who have helped books, reading and culture become part of our society. Lorenza Machín perfectly represents that spirit.”
Lorenza Machín is, furthermore, a figure who has been present at the Book Fair itself and in various cultural spaces across Fuerteventura. This award also pays tribute to an entire generation of creators who have kept the island’s culture alive.
Book Fair
Lorenza Machín’s relationship with the Book Fair and with literary creation on the island goes back years. In 2022 she took part in the round table ‘Escribir en Fuerteventura’ (Writing in Fuerteventura), sharing the stage with other majorero authors to reflect on the influence of the island, its landscapes and its people on literary creation.
Her presence in the Fair’s programme also dates back to previous editions, having taken part in 2015 in the Young Literature programme as a storyteller.
This connection with the Fair gives the recognition a particularly significant meaning: it rewards not only an individual career, but also a way of taking part in and contributing to the cultural development of Fuerteventura.
