The Cabildo de Fuerteventura, through its Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, is marking Rural Women’s Day with an event paying tribute to women from Fuerteventura’s rural, or majorero, communities. It will take place on Wednesday, 14 October, from 7.00pm, in the auditorium of the Fuerteventura Archaeological Museum (Betancuria).
In doing so, the island Corporation aims to highlight the role women play in keeping Fuerteventura’s primary sector alive, a sector that forms part of the Island’s very identity.
A total of six women will be honoured: Carmen Delia Suárez (Tuineje), María Jesús Rodríguez Vera (Puerto del Rosario), Teresa del Pino Hernández Ramos (Pájara), Margot Robayna Alonso (Betancuria), Asunción Alonso Viera (La Oliva) and Alicia Martínez (Antigua), representing and celebrating the role played by all rural women across Fuerteventura.
The Cabildo de Fuerteventura invites the public to attend this open event, which will include musical performances and forms part of the celebrations for International Rural Women’s Day, marked every year on 15 October.
