The Cabildo de Fuerteventura is adding more than €3.3 million to its general budget to strengthen key areas such as environmental management, the promotion of renewable energy and water infrastructure.
The surplus funds are being incorporated following approval at an extraordinary plenary session, and will be directed towards these and other priority areas. The island’s president, Lola García, highlighted this budgetary effort, saying it “will allow us to continue promoting actions to protect our territory, keep moving towards energy efficiency, and look after the wellbeing of the people who live here and the essential services they rely on”.
Meanwhile, the Councillor for Finance, Nuria Cabrera, stressed “the importance of directing investment towards priority areas so that Fuerteventura becomes a more sustainable and better-cared-for island”. A total of €600,000 will go towards actions linked to waste management, cleaning and environmental maintenance across the island.
Grants aimed at supporting self-consumption in homes, the purchase of electric vehicles, and self-consumption schemes for shops and small businesses, awarded by the Councillor for Industry, have also been increased by €351,281.92.
Part of the funding will also go towards the installation of photovoltaic lighting along the Puerto del Rosario seafront promenade, as part of the actions being carried out by the Councillor for Tourism to make the island a more sustainable destination.
As for water infrastructure, €652,766.22 has been earmarked for projects carried out by the Consorcio de Abastecimiento de Aguas a Fuerteventura (CAAF), including the replacement of distribution networks in areas of Tetir and the renovation of the photovoltaic roof of the CAAF’s warehouse, both located in Puerto del Rosario.
The area of Security and Emergencies has also been strengthened, with €200,000 allocated to reinforcing the Island Operational Coordination Centre (CECOPIN), the operational and coordinating body of the Island Emergency Plan (PEIN).
