Cabildo, La Oliva Town Council and landowners complete one of the final steps before works begin with the signing of preliminary expropriation records
As a result of collaboration between the island institution and La Oliva Town Council, the Cabildo de Fuerteventura has awarded the contract for works on the Lajares crossing, worth almost €4 million. The strategic project will improve the layout and accessibility of this stretch of the FV-109 road as it passes through the village of Lajares, in the municipality of La Oliva.
On Wednesday, the president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Lola García, and the mayor of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco, took a further step towards advancing the project by signing the preliminary expropriation records required to carry out the works. The signing reflects the collaboration between both administrations in facilitating a project that will improve safety, accessibility and conditions along this stretch of road.
The island president, Lola García, stressed the importance of improving the island’s road network, “because it directly improves the quality of life of the people of Fuerteventura”. García also highlighted the collaboration with town councils, which makes it possible to drive forward all these improvements to road infrastructure, as well as work on rural tracks and unpaved roads — in this case with the coordination of La Oliva Town Council to improve the accessibility and safety of a stretch that has seen a sharp increase in traffic and pedestrian footfall.
The mayor of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco, reaffirmed the Town Council’s commitment to projects that improve the safety and accessibility of road infrastructure and that respond to residents’ demands.
The project, driven by the Roads Department, headed by Blas Acosta, has been awarded to the company Obras Públicas Canarias S.L. With a ten-month execution period, the works will regenerate the town’s urban area.
On one hand, pedestrian accessibility will be improved with new pavements, the infrastructure needed for traffic lights will be installed, and new lighting will be added to improve conditions in the area. On the other hand, the project includes the removal of architectural barriers as one of its key aims, with the construction of adapted kerb ramps, pedestrian crossings and other features. It will also include the development of the sewage network.
The works will cover an area of 25,600 m², including the roadway, paved pavements and planters. The project is located on Calle Coronel González del Hierro, between kilometre points 3+940 and 5+050.
