Puerto del Rosario marks the occasion with free public transport and five months of record-breaking growth.

The municipality is joining European Mobility Week at a time of unprecedented progress for its urban transport network. The town has now recorded five consecutive months of historic growth, reaching unprecedented figures and consolidating a real shift in residents’ travel habits.

Sustained growth marks a turning point

After a brief dip in demand in February (13,629 journeys), the service began an upward trend that has continued steadily ever since:

  • March: 15,452 journeys
  • April: 17,498
  • May: 19,567
  • June: 24,163
  • July: 25,672

Mayor David de Vera said that “the Ayuntamiento is working to ensure public transport improves every day: strengthening services, applying new technologies to optimise resources, and offering residents a broad, efficient and environmentally friendly mobility service.”

Councillor for Transport, Luis Chacón, highlighted that “for the first time, Puerto del Rosario has surpassed 25,000 journeys a month, leaving behind the previous historic high of 17,000 and recording a cumulative increase of more than 12,000 passengers since March.”

Improvements driving a faster, more accessible and reliable service

The growth of urban transport reflects the system’s continuous improvement. Buses are now operating at commercial speeds of 18–19 km/h, well above the usual figures for urban transport (12–14 km/h), thanks to a more agile, accessible and well-organised operation.

Among the key improvements are:

  • Average waiting times of between 8 and 12 minutes
  • Real-time information at digital bus shelters
  • Accessible vehicles and adapted bus stops
  • Stable frequencies and better coordination between routes
  • Operational adjustments to avoid overlaps and improve pick-up capacity

These measures are consolidating a more efficient and comfortable system, one that is increasingly being chosen by local residents.

Public transport: the infrastructure behind the cities of the future

European Mobility Week is also an opportunity to highlight the essential role public transport plays in building more sustainable and liveable cities.

From a technical standpoint, a single bus can carry the equivalent of around 70 cars, taking up less space, generating fewer emissions and freeing up road capacity. It is a mode of transport that allows thousands of people to travel with dignity, accessibility and safety.

In terms of efficiency, public transport is ten times—or even more—effective than the traditional model based on private cars. It is the infrastructure that keeps cities running, makes streets safer, and ensures mobility remains an accessible right for everyone.

A week to try the bus and discover its benefits

Throughout European Mobility Week, urban transport will be free, inviting residents to try the bus, discover its comfort, and experience first-hand the speed and reliability of the service.

The Ayuntamiento is encouraging both residents and visitors to take advantage of this opportunity to incorporate public transport into their daily journeys and help build a more sustainable, modern and healthy mobility model.

Puerto del Rosario moves towards more sustainable mobility

The figures and improvements introduced confirm that Puerto del Rosario is building a modern and efficient urban mobility model, with a public transport service that improves month by month and has already reached record levels of use.

European Mobility Week will provide a further boost as the town continues to move towards becoming a more sustainable, accessible city, ready for the future.
