The island employment scheme is also working on the Tuineje church and other heritage sites in Fuerteventura
The ‘Memoria Viva’ employment plan, run by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura’s Department of Employment Promotion, continues to carry out conservation and improvement work at various heritage sites across Fuerteventura, with particular attention this week to Vega de Río Palmas, which is preparing to host the Fiestas en Honor a Nuestra Señora de La Peña from 17 to 20 September.
Work in Vega de Río Palmas and the surrounding area began on 20 August, while work on the church itself started on 1 September. Crews are currently scraping and repainting the exterior of the church, as well as carrying out various improvement works around the square, including painting the street’s outer walls, varnishing the picnic area behind the church and treating the doors on the cobbled street. Work is also planned soon on painting a Cabildo-owned house nearby.
The Cabildo de Fuerteventura’s Councillor for Employment Promotion, Nuria Cabrera; the Councillor for Cultural Heritage, Rayco León; and the mayor of Tuineje, David Herrera, visited the ongoing works, where they were able to see first-hand the improvement and upkeep tasks being carried out by staff of the ‘Memoria Viva’ scheme.
Work under way at several sites across the island
The employment scheme has also this week begun conservation and restoration work at the Tuineje church. Since 7 September, the crew has been scraping the entire exterior of the building ahead of repainting it.
This work adds to projects already carried out at other heritage sites across the island. In the north, work has been done at Casa Alta de Tindaya and the Tetir church, where the projects are now practically finished. In Antigua, cleaning, scraping and exterior painting have also been carried out on the church, while in the south, work continues at the Jandía Natural Park Interpretation Centre, located at the Punta de Jandía lighthouse, where crews are improving access routes, restoring wooden elements and carrying out various bricklaying and painting tasks.
‘Memoria Viva: Plan Insular de Empleo y Conservación del Patrimonio’ is aimed at carrying out improvement and restoration work at public heritage sites across Fuerteventura, such as museums, cultural centres and historic buildings, with the goal of helping to preserve the island’s memory and identity, boost local employment and strengthen its cultural heritage.
The project is co-financed by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and the Government of the Canary Islands through funding from the Canary Islands Development Fund (FDCAN), with an investment of €472,007.63.
