To mark Ceuta’s Autonomy Day, commemorated on 2 September, Puerto del Rosario Town Council wishes to publicly convey its solidarity, warmth and institutional support to the people of Ceuta, as well as to its institutions and democratically elected representatives.
As an island and Atlantic municipality, and capital of Fuerteventura, Puerto del Rosario knows first-hand the particularities, challenges and opportunities that come with living in a territory with a distinctive geography and, in the case of the Canary Islands, the status of an Outermost Region of the European Union. Drawing on this shared experience, we wish to express our particular sensitivity towards Ceuta and the circumstances affecting its population, reaffirming the bonds of solidarity between territories which, despite their own distinct characteristics, share the need for a firm and lasting response from state institutions.
Puerto del Rosario Town Council expresses its institutional support for the city of Ceuta and its residents, particularly in the face of any circumstance that might disrupt the coexistence, security, stability and peace of mind that its citizens rightfully deserve.
Likewise, this Corporation considers it essential that the State, through its various institutions, exercise its constitutional responsibilities with determination, preserving and protecting the integrity and territorial boundaries of the nation and ensuring at all times the safety of its citizens and the inviolability of its territory. The events that took place on 30 July must not be repeated, and an effective institutional response must be found to prevent them from happening again.
Defending territorial integrity must go hand in hand with action aimed at restoring and preserving the peace of mind of the public, through swift, effective and coordinated procedures that enable a rapid response to particularly sensitive situations and help strengthen public confidence in the institutions and their ability to protect people’s rights and freedoms.
Puerto del Rosario Town Council likewise insists that all institutional action must place at its centre the dignity of individuals, respect for fundamental rights, unity, security and coexistence, ensuring that no political or territorial circumstance results in uncertainty, vulnerability or lack of protection for the public.
In this regard, this Corporation expresses its rejection of any expansionist ambitions on the part of the Kingdom of Morocco that call into question the Autonomous Cities, thereby jeopardising territorial stability, security or coexistence in those territories. This stance is fully compatible with the need to maintain and strengthen good-neighbourly relations that support the legitimate development of both countries’ aspirations. Cross-border cooperation, security, economic and cultural development, the management of migratory flows and coexistence all require responsibility, coordination, mutual respect and loyalty.
For all these reasons, Puerto del Rosario Town Council:
- Expresses its solidarity and warmth towards the people of Ceuta on the occasion of its Autonomy Day, conveying the recognition and support of the municipal Corporation and its residents.
- Declares its institutional support for Ceuta, its institutions and its citizens, reaffirming its commitment to defending their security, stability and coexistence, and its firm hope that normality can soon be restored.
