The 1st Women’s Football Memorial will bring together CD Peña de La Amistad, CD Caday Fuerteventura and Inter Playa Honda on 6 September
The Cabildo de Fuerteventura hosted the presentation on Wednesday of the 1st Carlos Romero Women’s Football Memorial, a new sporting fixture organised by CD Peña de la Amistad to pay tribute to a former member of its board of directors who was closely linked to sport and social life in Fuerteventura.
The tournament will take place on Sunday, 6 September, from 11.30am, at the Campo Municipal de Los Pozos, with the participation of CD Peña de La Amistad, CD Caday Fuerteventura and Inter Playa Honda. The event is supported by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Puerto del Rosario Town Council and the Government of the Canary Islands.
According to the president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Lola García, “women’s football in Fuerteventura is shining like never before, and it will do so again this Sunday with a memorial that is hugely important for CD Peña de La Amistad, but also for the Cabildo, Puerto del Rosario and Fuerteventura, because it pays tribute to the work Carlos Romero did for majorero society”.
On behalf of the Government of the Canary Islands, the Councillor for Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion and Water, Manuel Miranda, highlighted “majorero women’s football, an area in which CD Peña de la Amistad is a real benchmark, with a tournament that recalls the figure of Carlos Romero, a man committed to society”.
The mayor of Puerto del Rosario, David de Vera, acknowledged the effort being made by CD Peña de la Amistad and everyone involved to make this memorial a reality. Meanwhile, the island’s Councillor for Sport, Luis González, congratulated the club on the idea: “sport serves as a social tool, in this case by remembering a figure who was an essential reference point both socially and within CD Peña de la Amistad”.
The presentation was also attended by other representatives of CD Peña de la Amistad, the coach of the club’s women’s team, Fátima Rodríguez, members of Carlos Romero’s family, and the sporting director of Caday, Raúl Figueroa.
A tribute to Carlos Romero
The memorial was created as a tribute to Carlos Romero, a figure closely linked to Club Deportivo Peña de La Amistad with a long history of commitment to sport and to society in Fuerteventura. Romero, who passed away last year, was a member of the club’s board of directors for many years and played an active role in its development.
His connection to La Peña de La Amistad formed part of the history of an organisation with more than 50 years behind it, which since its founding in 1972 has carried out important work promoting sport and social interaction in Puerto del Rosario, with particular attention to grassroots sport.
Carlos Romero was also a leading figure in social services in Fuerteventura. He was the Cabildo’s first social worker, joining the institution in 1985, and went on to build a long career dedicated to defending social rights and promoting the wellbeing of local residents. In 2024, the Cabildo and the Colegio Oficial de Trabajo Social de Las Palmas unveiled a plaque in his honour at the Centro Insular de Juventud in recognition of his professional and personal legacy.
Three teams and the spotlight on women’s football
The 1st Memorial will bring together on the pitch CD Peña de La Amistad, one of the leading names in majorero women’s football, along with CD Caday Fuerteventura and Inter Playa Honda, completing a tournament designed as a space for bringing people together and promoting women’s football.
The memorial also comes at a time of particular momentum for the sport in Fuerteventura, with growing numbers of women’s teams and an increasing presence of women across the island’s various sporting categories and structures.
