The island reached 2,697 tonnes of glass packaging waste collected by the end of June, 200 tonnes more than in the same period of 2025
Cabildo and Ecovidrio have strengthened the island’s collection infrastructure, installing new container points in the municipalities of Pájara, Tuineje and La Oliva
Fuerteventura continues to boost its recycling figures. During the first half of 2026, the island recorded a significant rise in the collection of glass packaging waste compared with the same period the previous year. Over these months, majoreros deposited a total of 2,697 tonnes of glass packaging waste, an 8% increase representing more than 200 additional tonnes compared with the same period in 2025.
According to figures from Ecovidrio, the island of Fuerteventura leads the way in glass recycling, alongside Lanzarote, and sits above the Spanish average. In Fuerteventura, the average is 35.9 kilograms of glass per inhabitant (more than 120 containers per person a year), collected via the more than 1,000 green bins distributed across the island, while the Spanish average stands at 20 kilograms per inhabitant (68 containers per person).
Recycling of light packaging and paper and cardboard also continues to grow in Fuerteventura. This increase, according to the president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, is down “to the investments driven by the island Corporation to improve waste treatment, but above all to the growing awareness among the public, which is crucial to keep moving towards a circular and sustainable economy”.
The Councillor for Waste, Enrique Pérez, points out that “the Cabildo has made a major effort to improve transfer plants and machinery, and has even launched a mobile recycling point to bring recycling to every corner of the island. On top of this, we have acquired new side-loading containers to strengthen selective collection, and of course carried out awareness campaigns among a population that is increasingly conscious of the issue”.
In the words of Jorge Lorenzo, Ecovidrio’s manager in the Canary Islands: “These results confirm Fuerteventura’s strong performance in glass packaging waste collection, as well as the commitment and shared responsibility that both residents and the majorero administration have always shown towards the circular economy. The figures suggest that in 2026 we will improve on last year’s results. Together with the Cabildo, Ecovidrio will keep proposing ever more sophisticated plans to continue increasing collection rates”.
Ecovidrio improves the container network in Fuerteventura
The Cabildo de Fuerteventura and Ecovidrio have been working in recent months to strengthen the island’s container infrastructure, with the aim of removing barriers to recycling and continuing to improve the container network. Specifically, new container points have been installed in some of the island’s municipalities, such as Pájara, Tuineje and La Oliva. Fuerteventura now has one container for every 126 inhabitants, compared with the Spanish average of one container for every 188 inhabitants.
