Restoration of the traditional heritage linked to the agricultural, hydraulic and ethnographic landscape of this iconic site in Tuineje continues and is set to run for several more weeks
The Cabildo de Fuerteventura’s Public Works and Machinery Service is continuing restoration work at the Fuente de Manitaga and its associated traditional heritage, in the municipality of Tuineje. Given the level of public interest the project has generated, officials are asking visitors for “patience” and requesting that they avoid interfering with the work crews, whose task will continue for several more weeks.
This is the final phase of the restoration of the Fuente de Manitaga and its surroundings, a project that builds on work carried out months ago under the ‘Fuerteventura, bonita por naturaleza’ programme. It is being driven forward by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura’s Public Works and Machinery Service through its own agency, Gestión y Planeamiento Territorial y Medioambiental (Gesplan), in collaboration with the Consejo Insular de Aguas de Fuerteventura (Ciaf).
The aim is to recover and showcase this traditional heritage, linked to the agricultural, hydraulic and ethnographic landscape of the municipality and the island as a whole, given that Manitaga stands as a significant example of Fuerteventura’s water culture.
The specialist crew assigned to the project is working to restore pre-existing dry-stone walls, improve the accessibility of the footpath, and carry out work on the spring itself, clearing sediment to allow water to flow naturally. Thanks to the removal of flood debris deposited in the old reservoir, it is now possible to see the natural spring emerging from the mountainside, a sight that has drawn considerable interest from residents of Tuineje.
It is worth noting that, beyond being a physical site of historic use, the Fuente de Manitaga serves as a gathering point for the collective memory of Fuerteventura and Tuineje, tied to the culture of water, the heroic farming practices developed under those same conditions, and the traditional landscape and character shaped over centuries that define the people of Fuerteventura today.
