The talk ‘Campanas con historia: sonidos del pasado majorero’ will be held on 4 September at the Antigua Auditorium
The Cabildo de Fuerteventura, through its Cultural Heritage Service, continues its ‘Encuentros con el Patrimonio’ series, an initiative that brings the island’s history and heritage closer to the public through talks and discussions with specialists.
The next session, titled ‘Campanas con historia: sonidos del pasado majorero’ (‘Bells with history: sounds of the majorero past’), will take place on Friday 4 September at 5.30pm at the Antigua Auditorium. The event will feature Gustavo A. Trujillo Yáñez and Samuel Brito Hernández, who will discuss the history of Fuerteventura’s bells and their value as part of the Island’s cultural heritage.
The Councillor for Cultural Heritage, Rayco León, stressed that «this series allows us to keep discovering elements of our heritage that are part of Fuerteventura’s history and everyday life». He added that «understanding and passing on these traditions is also a way of helping to preserve them and ensuring they remain part of our identity».
Bells as a means of communication
The talk will explore the historical and heritage significance of bells, as well as the language associated with their different rings, a practice that forms part of Fuerteventura’s intangible cultural heritage.
Beyond their physical presence, bells have traditionally served as a means of collective communication. Their sounds have been used to announce events, mark particular moments and call people together, becoming an expression linked to the memory and identity of communities.
With this session, ‘Encuentros con el Patrimonio’ focuses on both the bells themselves and the knowledge, sounds and traditions associated with them, helping to promote their understanding, preservation and transmission as part of Fuerteventura’s cultural heritage.
