This year’s competition, dedicated to ‘Myths and Legends of Fuerteventura’, will accept entries from 15 September to 13 November

Fuerteventura Film Commission presented the second edition of its Short Film Festival on Monday, an initiative aimed at continuing to boost the audiovisual sector and showcase the creativity and talent linked to Fuerteventura. Entries will open tomorrow, 15 September, and the call will remain open until 13 November.

The festival was presented on Monday in the Plenary Hall of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, with the participation of the President of the Cabildo, Lola García; the Fuerteventura Film Commission councillor, Nereida Calero; and the festival organisers, Adrián Tejero and Miquel Jaume, whose production company is working with Fuerteventura Film Commission to develop the initiative.

The President of the Cabildo, Lola García, said that “this festival allows us to continue showcasing Fuerteventura’s potential in the audiovisual field. From the Cabildo, we want to keep supporting creativity and talent and creating opportunities for them to develop, while also celebrating our island’s culture and identity”.

The Fuerteventura Film Commission councillor, Nereida Calero, said “we approach this second edition with the aim of continuing to consolidate an event that focuses on promoting talent in the island’s audiovisual sector”. Calero also encouraged people to take part, noting that “you don’t need to be a professional, just have an idea and want to tell it”.

Festival organiser Adrián Tejero praised Fuerteventura Film Commission’s commitment to giving continuity to the initiative, stressing that “this second edition marks a further step towards establishing a festival that truly belongs to Fuerteventura and continuing to help it grow”. He also revealed that this year there will be greater outreach and collaboration with islanders linked to the cultural sector.

Finally, fellow organiser Miquel Jaume highlighted the role that festivals of this kind play in boosting the audiovisual sector: “We’ve all started out at festivals. They’re a vital opportunity for those just starting out and for helping to build a strong audiovisual industry on the island”.

The theme chosen for this second edition is ‘Myths and Legends of Fuerteventura’, an open-ended concept that will allow participants to portray, reinterpret or create stories linked to the island’s culture and identity. The festival does not set a specific format or style, so entries may include fiction, documentary, experimental, comedy, horror, animation or video art.

Entries must be no longer than 15 minutes, including credits.

Open and free entry

The festival is open to people of any age and place of residence, with no limit on the number of works each author may submit. Entrants under 18 will need authorisation from a parent or legal guardian.

Entry is free and can be submitted via the festival’s website. https://aridafilms.com/festival

The entry period will remain open until 11.59pm on 13 November, Canary Islands time.

The jury will be made up of three figures from the audiovisual and cultural sector, who will be announced shortly through the festival’s official channels.

This second edition also sees an increase in prize money. The first prize for Best Short Film will be worth €1,000, while the second prize will carry €300 and the third €200.

The jury’s verdict and the in-person awards ceremony are scheduled for 27 November. Organisers may adjust these dates, with any changes announced via the festival’s official website.

With this new edition, Fuerteventura Film Commission continues to create spaces for audiovisual creation, allowing the stories, culture and landscapes of Fuerteventura to be told from a variety of perspectives.
