La Oliva Town Council, through its Sports Department headed by Gleiber Carreño, has presented the 27th Isla de Lobos–Fuerteventura Open Water Swim, organised by Club Deportivo Herbania, which will take place this Sunday, 18 October. The sporting event, firmly established as one of the Canary Islands’ longest-running open water swimming competitions, will bring together a total of 300 swimmers, reaching full capacity with registrations selling out in just 8 minutes of opening.
Participants will tackle a 3,500-metre course, starting from Punta Marrajo on Isla de Lobos at 12.00pm, with the finish at the ramp of Corralejo’s Sports Harbour, where the first swimmer is expected to arrive at around 12.50pm.
It is worth noting that the swim will count towards the 9th Canary Islands Open Water Cup (IX Copa Canaria Open de Aguas Abiertas) and the 4th Canary Islands Open Water Circuit (IV Circuito Canario Open de Aguas Abiertas). The competition also continues to carry a strong charitable element in support of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer).
The Mayor of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco, said: “The Isla de Lobos Swim is part of our municipality’s sporting calendar and represents an opportunity to showcase our natural surroundings through sport. We invite locals and visitors alike to enjoy this sporting spectacle in a setting such as Isla de Lobos and Corralejo bay.”
For his part, the Sports Councillor, Gleiber Carreño, noted: “Filling all 300 available places in just ten minutes shows the level of interest this swim generates among open water swimming enthusiasts. It’s a real satisfaction that Corralejo is once again the finishing point for an event of this calibre, which combines sport, community spirit and respect for our environment.”
