The ‘Science and Astronomy’ sessions will take place on 6 and 14 October, featuring solar observation, a mobile planetarium, astrophotography and night-time stargazing
The Cabildo de Fuerteventura, through its Department of New Technologies, continues to bring science outreach to the island’s municipalities through the ‘Ciencia y Astronomía’ (Science and Astronomy) project sessions, an initiative funded by the Canary Islands Development Fund (FDCAN) and carried out in collaboration with Tuineje Town Council. Under the slogan ‘Explore. Discover. Marvel. The universe awaits you’, the activities will come to Gran Tarajal on 6 October and to Tarajalejo on 14 October.
The two sessions are aimed at all audiences and will offer the chance to discover different aspects of astronomy and the universe through hands-on, educational activities. The programme includes solar and meteorite observation, mobile planetarium sessions, astrophotography and meteorite workshops, and night-time stargazing.
The Councillor for New Technologies, Carmen Alonso, points out that “these kinds of initiatives allow us to bring science closer to the public in a different way, making knowledge accessible so that both children and adults can discover and enjoy astronomy”.
“We want to keep bringing this type of activity to different parts of the island and create outreach spaces that spark curiosity and interest in science,” the councillor adds.
Gran Tarajal, 6 October
The first session will take place on Tuesday 6 October at the Gran Tarajal Municipal Sports Centre. Solar and meteorite observation will run from 10.00am to 2.00pm, while the mobile planetarium will offer sessions every hour throughout the morning, from 10.00am to 2.00pm, and in the afternoon, from 4.00pm to 7.00pm.
During the afternoon, from 4.00pm to 7.00pm, an astrophotography and meteorite workshop will also be held. The day will end at 9.00pm with a night-time stargazing session at Plaza Tran Tran.
Tarajalejo, 14 October
On Wednesday 14 October it will be Tarajalejo’s turn, with activities taking place mainly at the Terrero de Lucha Pedro Sánchez wrestling arena. Solar and meteorite observation will run from 10.00am to 2.00pm, while the mobile planetarium will offer sessions every hour from 10.00am to 2.00pm and from 4.00pm to 6.00pm.
The astrophotography and meteorite workshop will be held from 4.00pm to 6.00pm, and in the evening, at 9.00pm, a night-time stargazing session will take place on Avenida de Las Palmeras, in the restaurant area.
All activities are free and open to residents, visitors and anyone with an interest in astronomy. Through this programme, the Cabildo also aims to highlight the quality of Fuerteventura’s skies and bring scientific knowledge closer to the public through educational, participatory experiences.
