Admission is free, booking required
The Fuerteventura Book Fair is adding Mahmud y no solo Mahmud to its programme, a contemporary circus production by Puntocero Company that explores migration from a human, political and artistic perspective. The show can be seen this Sunday, 18 October, at 5.00pm in the Symphony Hall of the Palacio de Formación y Congresos, and is recommended for audiences aged 12 and over.
Admission is free, but advance booking is required via culturafuerteventura.es.
The piece is based on the true story of Mahmud Traoré, told in the book Partir para contar, written by Traoré himself together with Bruno Le Dantec. Through his testimony, the production traces his experiences from Senegal to Europe, a journey marked by uncertainty, exploitation and the struggle to survive.
Rather than simply recounting one individual’s experience, the production shines a light on the people behind migration stories and the circumstances that drive so many to leave their homes. The title reflects this aim to go beyond a single story, giving visibility to the many other lives and experiences that remain out of the spotlight.
Directed by Zenaida Alcalde, with dramaturgy by Silvia Albert Sopale and Alcalde herself, Mahmud y no solo Mahmud combines acrobatics, physical theatre and live songs to bring Traoré’s testimony to the stage. The cast features Thomas King, Betiza Bismark, Elvis Kyengo Kakiti, Colins Ouna Opiyo and Joel Bwana Anabaka.
Founded by Zenaida Alcalde and Miguel Muñoz, Puntocero Company has developed a distinctive stage language blending circus, magic and physical theatre. Since premiering at the Teatro Circo Price in Madrid in 2023, Mahmud y no solo Mahmud has toured various venues and festivals across Spain, including dFERIA in San Sebastián, Fira Trapezi, the Badajoz International Theatre Festival, the Festival Determinantes at the Teatro Circo Murcia, the Inaem Inclusion Days, Espacio La Granja and the Temudas Festival.
With this production, the Fuerteventura Book Fair expands its programme with a work that links the performing arts to memory, literature and social commitment. The show invites audiences to listen to a true testimony, question simplistic views of migration, and engage with a complex reality through human experience.
The Book Fair is organised by the Centro Bibliotecario Insular, part of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura’s Department of Culture, with the collaboration of the Instituto Canario de Desarrollo Cultural of the Government of the Canary Islands. The regional government’s Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Children and Family is also taking part.
