The Education department is gathering information on housing costs, associated expenses and the main difficulties faced by students and families, with a view to proposing solutions at the FECAI working group
The Cabildo de Fuerteventura, through its Education and Youth Service, has launched a study to gain an in-depth understanding of the accommodation situation faced by island residents who must move away from Fuerteventura to continue their studies. The initiative will provide data on the costs borne by students, the difficulties they face in accessing housing, and possible measures that could help ease the problem.
To this end, an invitation was sent out on Monday to students studying off the island, asking them to take part in an anonymous questionnaire, the results of which will be treated collectively. The aim is to obtain as accurate a picture as possible of a situation that affects many young majoreros and their families every academic year.
The President of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Lola García, stressed the importance of “listening directly to those experiencing this situation and having data that allows us to gauge the scale of the problem”. García noted that studying off the island already represents a significant effort for many families, “compounded by an increasingly complex housing market and expenses that can end up affecting whether students are able to continue their studies”.
The questionnaire covers issues such as the cost of finding and maintaining accommodation, the expenses students must cover while living away from Fuerteventura, and the main difficulties they encounter when trying to access housing. It will also gather students’ own views on the measures that could help improve their situation.
The Councillor for Education, Youth and Water, Adargoma Hernández, explained that the study “will allow us to move from perceptions to concrete data, and to find out first-hand just how much it is costing majorero students to study away from Fuerteventura”. Hernández stressed that the aim is for the information gathered to have a practical application, so that “we can bring proposals and possible solutions to the FECAI working group, backed by the reality our students are facing”.
The Education Department is therefore encouraging as many Fuerteventura-resident students currently studying off the island as possible to take part, since a higher response rate will provide a more representative picture of the situation and the needs that exist.
