Red Eléctrica has announced that it will begin dismantling the 66kV line between Corralejo and Matas Blancas in early 2027
The Cabildo de Fuerteventura and representatives from Red Eléctrica have held a meeting as part of the roadmap for dismantling the old 66kV power line between Corralejo and Matas Blancas. The president of the island council, Lola García, and the Councillor for Spatial Planning, Nereida Calero, met with Red Eléctrica’s Director of Infrastructure in the Canary Islands, Daniel Pérez Varela, Redeia’s delegate in the Canary Islands, Ainara Irigoyen, and the project director for the dismantling work, Pablo García Celáa, in order to share the information available and learn the details of the dismantling process, which is mainly determined by the environmental and construction criteria of each area.
As Lola García pointed out, “this is the largest dismantling of a power line ever carried out in the Archipelago, which is why it is important to hold coordination meetings to finalise its removal, now that Red Eléctrica has awarded the works contract, and to ensure that it is carried out with the utmost respect for the environment”.
García also expressed the Cabildo’s commitment to maintaining “full administrative cooperation, also relying on the support of the town councils, to speed up the authorisations and permits needed to comply with the requirements for its removal”.
For her part, Nereida Calero highlighted the importance “not only of restoring the occupied land to its natural state, given its impact on the landscape, biodiversity and our natural resources, but above all so that affected residents can regain use of the land after waiting for so long”.
Dismantling
During the meeting, Red Eléctrica representatives announced that, in coordination with the Cabildo, dismantling of the 66kV line between Corralejo and Matas Blancas will begin early next year, now that the administrative process for authorising the line’s decommissioning and dismantling has been completed.
The line will be dismantled in accordance with a set of preventive and corrective environmental measures to ensure that the removal work has as little impact as possible on the surrounding area, restoring the land to its original condition.
Before the works begin, which will last 18 months and will affect various areas across the municipalities of La Oliva, Puerto del Rosario, Antigua, Tuineje and Pájara, Red Eléctrica will inform landowners jointly with the Cabildo and other authorities.
The dismantling work on the 66kV line between Corralejo and Matas Blancas has already been awarded and involves the removal of 352 pylons and their conductor cables, the de-tensioning and removal of conductor and earth cables, the dismantling of structures, the collection of conductors, earth cables and insulator strings, the demolition of foundations, the removal of leftover civil works materials and, where applicable, the bases of the old pylons, as the main tasks involved.
