The mayor, Juan Cabrera, and the Councillor for Festivities, Lucila Ruiz, have announced a varied programme of events for all ages, and thanked the Fiestas Committee for its hard work and effort.
Antigua Town Council has announced that the Peña del Mar festival in Caleta de Fuste is coming this October, running from 8 to 11 October, with a wide range of sporting, youth, cultural and leisure activities for all audiences.
The mayor, Juan Cabrera, said this is a well-established festival in the resort town, with both residents and tourists taking part, and that this year a lot of young people have got involved in the Fiestas Committee, as they represent both tradition and the future.
The Councillor for Festivities, Lucila Ruiz, wanted to thank the Fiestas Committee for its perseverance and effort in putting together a varied programme suited to different tastes and ages. She added that the opening address will be given by three well-loved local residents, who will be interviewed by pupils from the CEIP El Castillo school.
“We’ll kick things off with music and a toast, and on Friday 9 October, in the morning, there will be a display of vehicles and work by the security and emergency services, including the Guardia Civil, Local Police, Canary Islands Police and Civil Protection,” explained the area’s councillor.
The full festival programme includes sports tournaments, the return of the bateles rowing regatta, a youth beach party, a batukada drumming gathering, workshops, a fishing competition, a dessert contest and open-air dances.
The mayor, Juan Cabrera, concluded that the main day will be Sunday 11 October, with a religious mass and procession accompanied by the Juan Peña folk group, and plenty of atmosphere down at the harbour with bateles, a water festival, a performance by the senior citizens’ rondalla group, and the festival programme closing with the group Jacomar.
