The show, which offers an ironic look at the myths of masculinity, will take place on Sunday at 8.30pm, following the presentation of the Reader’s Award
The Fuerteventura Book Fair will bring its programme to a close with De acero inolvidable, a recital blending humour, poetry and live music to explore, with irony and without compromise, the light and dark sides of the so-called Iberian macho. Actor Fernando Gil, known for his role as Pedro Aguilar in the series Machos Alfa, will be accompanied by the guitar of Argentine composer and musician Fernando Egozcue in a show that invites audiences to laugh at traditional clichés of masculinity.
The recital has been brought in to close the fair as a replacement for the show Bécquer y Quevedo. Amor y muerte, which had to be cancelled due to health problems affecting actor Pedro Casablanc.
The performance will take place on Sunday at 8.30pm, following the presentation of the Reader’s Award. In this way, the fair will wrap up its programme with a stage production that brings together literature, performance and music.
In De acero inolvidable, Fernando Gil delves into the contradictions of an archetype deeply rooted in the popular imagination. Its feigned grandeur, its arrogance, its blunders and its peculiar knack for falling into the absurd sit alongside its supposed virtues and inexplicable acts of daring. Songs, legends, poems, stories, anecdotes, jokes and testimonies provide the raw material to dismantle, amid laughter and music, some of the most enduring myths of Iberian masculinity.
The show takes a biting look that goes beyond simply caricaturing the character, exploring instead his contradictions and his determination to fuel his own decline. The result is a theatrical journey in which humour becomes a tool for questioning behaviours, clichés and traditional models, with the audience’s complicity as a key ingredient.
Fernando Gil, from ‘Machos Alfa’ to the stage
Fernando Gil is one of the leading faces of Machos Alfa, the comedy that tackles the crisis of masculinity among a group of men over 40. In the series he plays Pedro Aguilar, a character that connects with the world of De acero inolvidable through his relationship with the contradictions and challenges of contemporary masculinity.
His career spans film, television and theatre. He made his big-screen debut in Resultado final, by Juan Antonio Bardem, and began working in television with the series Hospital Central. Since then he has appeared in productions such as Cuéntame cómo pasó, Muchachada Nui, La que se avecina, Anclados and Spanish Movie, as well as playing King Felipe VI in the television biopic Felipe y Letizia.
Fernando Egozcue, a guitar with international reach
The show features Fernando Egozcue, an Argentine composer and guitarist based in Madrid since 1992, whose music moves between different languages and traditions. His work includes compositions for chamber ensembles and large orchestral groups, as well as music for theatre, film and dance. He has released fifteen albums of his music.
Between 1998 and 2009 he was composer, arranger and guitarist for Ensamble Nuevo Tango, and has enjoyed a long-standing collaboration with violinist Ara Malikian. He has also worked with artists such as José Mercé, Pasión Vega, José Manuel Zapata, José Luis Montón and Jorge Pardo.
The Book Fair is organised by the Centro Bibliotecario Insular (Island Library Centre), under the Culture Department of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, with the collaboration of the Instituto Canario de Desarrollo Cultural of the Government of the Canary Islands. The regional government’s Deputy Ministry for Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Children and Family also takes part.
