The programme will take place on 20 October with a mobile planetarium, workshops and sky observations
The municipality of Antigua will host a new Science and Astronomy day on 20 October, an initiative driven by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura’s Department of New Technologies to bring scientific knowledge and the exploration of the universe closer to the public through free activities aimed at all audiences.
The programme will offer an opportunity to discover the universe from different perspectives, with educational experiences that combine learning, experimentation and sky observation.
The Councillor for New Technologies, Carmen Alonso, highlighted the importance of bringing science closer to the public through accessible and participatory initiatives. “With initiatives like this, we want to spark curiosity, especially among young people, and give families the chance to discover and learn about the universe in an engaging and approachable way. Science helps us better understand the world around us, and it’s important to create spaces that foster that interest,” she said.
The programme will begin with a mobile planetarium at the Antigua Auditorium ‘Manuel Sánchez González’, offering hourly sessions from 10.00am to 2.00pm and from 4.00pm to 6.00pm. This space will allow participants to get closer to the universe and gain a better understanding of astronomical phenomena in a hands-on, educational way.
In the afternoon, from 4.00pm to 6.00pm, the same auditorium will host an astrophotography and meteorites workshop, an activity designed to show how images of celestial objects are captured and to provide more information about these bodies from outer space. The day will also include a solar and meteorite observation activity around the auditorium.
The programme will conclude with a night-time observation session in Antigua’s main square, scheduled for 9.00pm, offering the chance to enjoy the night sky and learn more about the elements that make up the universe.
The initiative is organised by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, through the Department of New Technologies, in collaboration with Antigua Town Council (Ayuntamiento de Antigua) and funded by the Canary Islands Development Fund (Fondo de Desarrollo de Canarias, FDCAN).
