El Cotillo provides the salt. La Oliva Town Council provides the art. The council, through its Department of Culture headed by David Hernández, today unveiled the Sal y Arte Festival, a cultural event that will take over the streets of El Cotillo from 8 to 10 October. Visitors will be able to enjoy art forms including circus, dance, craft and music, alongside other activities such as street parades and stargazing sessions, filling the village with art in all its forms for the whole family.
The festival turns the village’s streets into a stage for artists from both the island and beyond, bringing art closer to adults and children alike. The programme opens on Thursday 8 October with an open-air screening of “My Neighbour Totoro” by director Hayao Miyazaki at 8.00pm. On Friday 9 October, the Fit Kid performance by Club Deportivo Relevé takes place at 7.00pm, followed by the family circus show Circo Picnic, led by Gema Escobar, at 7.30pm. The evening continues with a street parade by Batucada Corumba at 8.15pm and the show “Desprovisto” by Cía Uparte at 8.40pm.
The main day, Saturday 10 October, kicks off with the aerial show “Onyria Circus” by Stefi de Bosque Tabaibart at 10.30am, followed by the show “Baktana” by Compañía Lazuz at 7.30pm. The village will then come alive with a street parade by the 101 Brass Band – Street Music at 8.10pm, with a second performance at 10.10pm, and the dance show “El Amor” by Daniel Navarro at 8.40pm. At 9.40pm, local artist Carla Carballo will take to the stage with a musical performance, followed by the “Twilight Show” by Aerial Espectáculos at 9.30pm, and the day will close at 10.30pm with the “Dolce Salato” show by Cía Carpa Diem.
In addition, from 9.00pm to 11.00pm, visitors can enjoy a stargazing session in Callejón del Risco led by Astrociencianomada.
The Mayor of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco, said: “With this 11th edition of the Sal y Arte Festival, we are bringing a wide range of artistic disciplines to the residents of the municipality. We invite everyone to come and enjoy the art in the village of El Cotillo from 8 to 10 October.”
For his part, the Councillor for Culture, David Hernández, explained: “Once again we are launching the street festival in El Cotillo, which this year will be called Sal y Arte. We’ll kick things off on Thursday with a film screening — the anime ‘My Neighbour Totoro’ — and then, on both Friday and Saturday, we’ll have a variety of street arts including music, dance, clowning, juggling and acrobatics: in short, a whole host of activities to delight the people of El Cotillo.”
