The council initiative saw 60 children take part and combined sport, educational leisure, cultural and recreational activities, alongside services designed to help working families
Puerto del Rosario Town Council has held the closing ceremony for the August session of the 2026 Summer Camp and Sports programme, a council initiative in which 60 children aged between 6 and 12 took part, run with the aim of promoting physical activity, healthy habits, social interaction and the educational and recreational use of the school holidays.
The August session, which ran from 10 August to 4 September, continued the summer programme of the Summer Camp and Sports scheme, offering a multidisciplinary programme combining sporting, educational, cultural, recreational and healthy leisure activities, while also helping parents balance work and family life during the summer period.
The programme was designed to give children an environment of participation, social interaction and learning, making use of various sports facilities and public spaces around the municipality, with activities tailored to the ages and characteristics of the participants.
A sporting, educational and recreational programme
Over the course of the camp, participants took part in activities at the Los Pozos Municipal Stadium, the Oasis Municipal Sports Hall, the Puerto de Cabras Lucha Canaria Ring (Terrero de Lucha), the Biblioplaya and Los Pozos Beach, among other municipal venues.
The sports programme introduced the children to a range of physical activities, including alternative sports, conventional sporting disciplines and traditional Canarian sports, with a particular focus on lucha canaria (Canarian wrestling), helping to raise awareness and appreciation of one of the archipelago’s own sporting and cultural traditions.
The camp also included leisure and recreational activities on the beach, particularly around Los Pozos Beach, where participants enjoyed outdoor games and activities in a spirit of social interaction and participation.
These activities were complemented by sessions at the Biblioplaya, encouraging reading habits and the educational use of free time, alongside content focused on respect and care for the environment, social interaction and healthy lifestyle habits.
The use of various municipal venues allowed for a dynamic and varied programme, combining physical activity, learning, educational leisure and outdoor experiences.
Catering services and family support measures
As part of the comprehensive provision of the 2026 Summer Camp and Sports programme, participants were provided with lunch through a catering service, ensuring they were properly fed throughout the day and complementing the full range of scheduled activities.
In addition, to help parents balance work and family life, early and late drop-off/pick-up services were made available, extending the hours during which children could be looked after and giving families greater flexibility over arrival and collection times.
In this way, the camp has established itself as a comprehensive council resource which, as well as promoting sport and healthy leisure, provides additional services designed to meet families’ needs during the school holidays.
A closing day marked by fun and togetherness
The closing day of the August session took place at the Los Pozos Municipal Stadium, where the 60 participants enjoyed a festive final day featuring bouncy castles, games, entertainment activities and various recreational activities, bringing several weeks of activities, togetherness and participation to a close.
As a memento of their participation in this year’s edition, the Sports Department presented the children with a commemorative 2026 Summer Camp and Sports hat, along with various other gifts.
The event was attended by the mayor of Puerto del Rosario, David de Vera, the second deputy mayor, David de León, and the councillor for sport, Luis Chacón, who stressed the importance of continuing to promote council programmes for children that combine physical activity, education, healthy leisure and social interaction.
During the event, council representatives also thanked the participating families, the team of monitors and all the professionals and organisations involved in running the programme, whose cooperation was essential to its successful delivery.
Service management
The 2026 Summer Camp and Sports programme was run as part of the service managed by Puerto del Rosario Town Council and delivered by GRUPO TAFOR CANARIAS, S.L.U., the contractor awarded the service.
With the closure of this session, Puerto del Rosario Town Council highlights the continuity of an initiative that brings together sports promotion, educational leisure, cultural and recreational activities, catering and family support services, strengthening the council’s offering for children during the summer period.
The Summer Camp and Sports programme has thus become one of the council’s main initiatives to promote the wellbeing, physical activity, social interaction and all-round development of the municipality’s children, while also providing a valuable support resource for families during the school holidays.
