The Cabildo and the Federación Canaria de Baloncesto are backing a programme that combines sports training with girls’ personal development, encouraging them to stick with basketball
The ‘Encestando Futuros’ project held its first training session of the second edition in Fuerteventura this Sunday, aimed at girls involved in minibasket and preminibasket. The initiative, jointly promoted by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura through its Department of Sports and the Federación Canaria de Baloncesto, aims to help girls stay involved in sport and offer them new opportunities for learning and growth.
The programme consists of training sessions led by coaches from the Federación Canaria de Baloncesto, who travel to Fuerteventura to work with the girls on the technical and tactical aspects of the game, bring new experiences and strengthen their skills. The sessions also include activities designed to build confidence, team cohesion and motivation to keep playing basketball.
The training sessions will run throughout the season and will include travelling sessions across different municipalities on the island. The programme combines basketball’s technical and tactical work with activities focused on personal development, confidence, team cohesion and motivation to keep playing sport.
The island’s Sports Councillor, Luis González, highlighted the importance of giving continuity to this project, which allows young sportswomen to improve their skills and discover other facets of basketball. “We want girls to have the opportunity to progress as players and, in the future, to also consider other paths within this sport, such as coaching,” he said.
Meanwhile, the president of the Federación Canaria de Baloncesto, Carlos Olano, thanked the Cabildo for its collaboration and noted that the project allows girls to train using techniques different from those in their usual activity. “It’s important for these girls to see that the Cabildo and basketball do a lot for them, so that sport becomes a way of life and a support throughout their training and education over the years,” he said.
Eu Etopa, one of the programme’s coaches, explained that the aim is for all girls to have opportunities within basketball and to help ensure they don’t give up on playing sport. The project thus seeks to strengthen their connection to the sport and provide them with female role models who encourage them to carry on.
The 2026-2027 season includes a schedule of 20 sessions between November 2026 and June 2027. The programme also features tools to track participants’ technical and attitudinal progress, as well as initiatives to support the training of female coaches and increase women’s presence in basketball on the island.
With ‘Encestando Futuros’, the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and the Federación Canaria de Baloncesto are committing to sport as a space for learning, support and equal opportunities for the island’s girls.
