The initiative forms part of the Red.es call for proposals to promote smart territories, and aims to boost business competitiveness, innovation and energy optimisation
The Cabildo is driving forward digital transformation on the island with a new island-wide infrastructure based on data, artificial intelligence and Digital Twin technology, which will have a direct effect on economic development, boosting business competitiveness, innovation and the creation of new data-driven services.
Under the title ‘Fuerteventura Smart Secure & Digital Twin 2030’, this strategic initiative, promoted by the Strategic Projects department of the island Corporation, has been selected under the RedCyTI call for proposals to promote smart cities and territories, securing €1.6 million in investment, of which €1.36 million comes from Red.es/FEDER.
Both the president of the Cabildo, Lola García, and the councillor for the area, Carmen Alonso, highlighted the value of a project that will give the Cabildo new tools to better understand the island, anticipate scenarios and support its decision-making with integrated information, through a digital infrastructure integrated at island-wide scale.
Lines of action
The project is structured around four major complementary actions. The first will be the launch of an Island Cybersecurity Platform, conceived as a layer of protection and trust for Fuerteventura’s digital ecosystem. It will strengthen system monitoring, detect anomalies and improve the capacity to respond to potential incidents that could affect infrastructure, services and information assets relevant to the island’s economic activity.
Alongside this, the project includes the development of a 3D/4D Island Digital Twin, an innovative planning tool that will provide a digital, dynamic and integrated representation of Fuerteventura. The system will bring together geospatial information and data relating to areas such as mobility, tourism, infrastructure and heritage, making it possible not only to visualise the territory but also to analyse how it functions, simulate scenarios and evaluate alternatives before making certain decisions.
The third strand of the project focuses on the energy optimisation of public infrastructure through artificial intelligence. Through sensor technology, data management and predictive models, the Cabildo will be able to analyse the energy performance of its infrastructure and improve its efficiency, moving from reactive management towards an approach based on information and the ability to anticipate needs.
Finally, a Territorial Data Space will be developed, enabling information from multiple sources to be integrated and structured and made available for reuse under criteria of interoperability and controlled openness. This infrastructure will also facilitate the development of services by creating experimentation environments for businesses, startups and technology centres, helping to energise the island’s ICT ecosystem.
