The rebellion of the outcasts

Women’s struggle for freedom is the leitmotif of human history. In La rebelión de las Parias (The Rebellion of the Outcasts), verses from Spain’s Golden Age by figures such as the silenced Ana Abarca de Bolea, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Leonor de la Cueva y Silva, Ana Caro and María de Zayas share the same space as the prose of other women likewise silenced by history: the women of the Spanish Civil War.

La rebelión de las Parias is a work about historical memory: it recovers the past to speak about the present. Voices from different eras connect to reflect on what binds them together despite the passing of centuries. It is an experimental stage piece that blends the classical with the contemporary, dramatic text with performance language, live music and experimentation with all the resources the stage has to offer.
