The second issue of Timple magazine features contributions from established timplistas, new talents, writers, researchers and journalists
The Cabildo de Fuerteventura today launched the programme for the III Encuentro Nacional del Timple (Third National Timple Gathering), running from 22 to 25 October at the Palacio de Formación y Congresos de Fuerteventura.
The III Encuentro Nacional del Timple opened with the presentation of the second issue of Timple magazine, the first monographic publication in the history of the Canary Islands dedicated to this instrument.
The publication’s coordinator, Marcos Hormiga, expressed his pride “in what has been set down in print in a magazine whose importance lies not only in the information it holds for the present, but also for generations to come”.
Timple brings together contributors ranging from established timplistas to new talents. Performers such as Domingo Rodríguez ‘El Colorao’, Benito Cabrera, David Duque, Derque Martín Cruz, Julia Rodríguez, Laura Martel and Pedro Ageno feature alongside writers including Elsa López, Félix Hormiga, Yeray Rodríguez and Marcos Hormiga himself.
The magazine also features contributions from researchers such as Félix Morales and Víctor J. Landeria, as well as interviewers and journalists of the calibre of Juan García Luján, who writes about José Antonio Ramos, a leading figure in the world of the timple in the Canary Islands.
According to the president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Lola García, “the timple is the most representative instrument of our culture. Fuerteventura is home to outstanding timplistas and researchers who serve as a benchmark, and whose legacy will remain indelible thanks to publications such as Timple magazine, which is now presenting its second issue”.
The Councillor for Culture, Rayco León, explained that “within the framework of the Encuentro Nacional del Timple, we believe it is essential that the voices of composers, performers and writers be captured in a publication that serves as a key tool for raising awareness of an instrument so much our own”. “The magazine will be distributed to schools, libraries and other accessible settings so that the timple continues to gain ever greater prominence.”
In the words of Domingo Rodríguez ‘El Colorao’, “specialist magazines already exist for traditional instruments such as the charango. That’s why, during the previous edition, we came up with the idea of producing a magazine devoted to the timple, resulting in a work of great quality, as a way of helping the timple continue to grow and the Encuentro Nacional del Timple continue gaining momentum.”
This edition of the Encuentro Nacional del Timple is organised by the Department of Culture (Consejería de Cultura), under the artistic direction of Domingo Rodríguez ‘El Colorao’, with the collaboration of the Escuela Insular de Música de Fuerteventura.
The programme for the III Encuentro Nacional del Timple continues this afternoon, with the opening of the exhibition ‘Timple, tradición y vanguardia’ curated by David Sánchez and a workshop on making timples from recycled materials led by Adán Moreno.
At 8.30pm, a concert by Pino&Pino will showcase the charango, a Hispano-American stringed instrument related to the timple, alongside pieces of Andean tradition, contemporary music and works from the Spanish Baroque.
Activities continue until 25 October, with the full programme available at https://culturafuerteventura.es/evento/iii-encuentro-nacional-del-timple/
The gathering will continue throughout the year, with activities in schools and the participation of students.
