Fuerteventura, beautiful by nature’ maintains in the ravines of Betancuria a program of actions over six months to preserve the ecosystems in good condition and ensure the proper circulation of water in case of rain.

The crews of ‘Fuerteventura, beautiful by nature’ are removing dry leaves from the palm trees that populate the ravine of the Valley. This action is part of an extensive program of interventions in the ravines of Betancuria at the initiative of the Cabildo, through its own means Territorial and Environmental Management and Planning (Gesplan), which will last half a year.

These are preventive works in places of high natural value aimed at preserving the good health of their ecosystems and ensuring the proper circulation of water in case of rain, removing weeds, garbage and any element that could be dragged and, by accumulation, end up favoring downstream flooding in public infrastructures and private properties.

The first actions, last week, in the ravine of the Valley focused on the pruning of vegetation in a section of about 200 meters where the bed was very dense and prevented the free flow of water.

These first interventions of the crews have given way this week to the removal of dry leaves from the populations of palm trees that dot the ravine of the Valley. These leaves, due to their size and consistency, can become hazardous materials in the event of floods that clog narrow natural passages or drainage passages under roads. In both cases, the accumulation of water and dragged materials can cause damage by flooding or by the force of the dammed water if the elements that contain it collapse and the water is suddenly released and accumulates energy downstream.

The actions in the ravines of Betancuria have the collaboration of the area of Environment and the Insular Water Council for the expediting of reports and supervision of the work. These works are carried out for six months, covering 28 sections of ravine in the municipality of Betancuria.

Fuerteventura, beautiful by nature’ is a powerful program endowed with 4 million euros of the Cabildo’s own funds that includes actions throughout the island for the conservation and maintenance of natural environments, as well as the implementation of small interventions that improve the quality of life of citizens.
