The City Council of Puerto del Rosario promotes a comprehensive strategy against school truancy

The City Council of Puerto del Rosario, through the Department of Social Services and the Department of Education, within the framework of the Program of Prevention, Awareness and Intervention in the community and education of the municipality, has held a new session of the Municipal Board of Truancy, which took place in the Plenary Hall of the Consistory.

The conference addressed the problem of school absenteeism, considered a matter of great magnitude and seriousness, as it represents a high risk indicator of school failure and early dropout from the educational system. This phenomenon, of a complex and multifactorial nature, requires a coordinated and multidisciplinary response involving all the actors with competences in the educational and social fields.

As a result of this joint work, the need arises to establish a clear institutional framework for action, which guides the intervention with truant students and their family environment in a protocolary manner.

During the round table, actions were defined for the 2025-2026 school year, with the transversal participation of various administrations: the Health area, the Insular Directorate of the General State Administration, the Social Welfare area of the Fuerteventura Island Council and the Education Department of the Canary Islands Government, reaffirming their commitment to institutional coordination and early intervention.

Likewise, the Opción 3 Canarias program of the Government of the Canary Islands-dedicated to working with and for children, families and adolescents-emphasizes our role as a bridge and accompaniment in the evolutionary processes and in the management of possible conflicts. We are committed to a positive outlook, focused not only on resolving, but also on learning from difficulties and fostering healthy emotional and social development environments.

In the words of Mayor David de Vera and Councilor for Education Tacoremi Gutiérrez, this initiative “marks a decisive step in the municipality’s commitment to guaranteeing the right to education and the fight against truancy from a preventive, inclusive and collaborative perspective.”
