The Board also discussed potential joint actions with six autonomous communities that have direct flight connections to the island
The Fuerteventura Island Tourism Board (Patronato Insular de Turismo) took part this week in the 6th Turespaña Convention, held in Zaragoza from 20 to 22 October under the slogan “Do you speak global? International tourism as a lever for transformation”. The convention is the main annual gathering of Spain’s tourism sector, organised by Turespaña, bringing together destinations, businesses and institutions to share strategies for international promotion. The Board was represented by the deputy president and Cabildo’s Tourism Councillor, Marlene Figueroa, and the Board’s managing director.
The Board’s participation focused on bilateral meetings held on 20 October with Spain’s tourism counsellors abroad for Austria, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Sweden. The meetings set out lines of action aimed at raising awareness of Fuerteventura as a destination in those source markets, with particular attention to organising familiarisation trips for tourism industry professionals who can act as advocates for the island in their home markets.
The convention also provided an opportunity to strengthen ties with the Basque Country, Galicia, Asturias, Andalusia, Madrid and Catalonia, autonomous communities with which Fuerteventura maintains direct flight connections. During the meetings, possible joint promotional actions were discussed to make the most of these connections and encourage more travellers to visit the island.
Marlene Figueroa, Tourism Councillor at the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and deputy president of the Island Tourism Board, stressed that “the Turespaña Convention is a forum for direct work with those who know each source market best. Agreeing joint actions with the tourism counsellors abroad allows us to reach industry professionals more precisely and effectively”.
The councillor also pointed out that “Fuerteventura is committed to qualitative growth, and any action that strengthens the island’s regular air connectivity with European markets is strategic for the destination. That is exactly what we have been working on this week in Zaragoza”.
The contacts made in Zaragoza will allow for continued joint work with tourism representatives abroad and with the autonomous communities to develop promotional actions aimed at Fuerteventura’s source markets.
