The Cabildo de Fuerteventura, through its Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries department, paid a well-deserved tribute to majorera rural women at an event held at the Fuerteventura Archaeological Museum in Betancuria.
To mark Rural Women’s Day (15 October), the island authority sought to give visibility to the women of rural Fuerteventura by honouring a total of six women: livestock entrepreneur Margot Robayna Alonso (Betancuria), cheese producer Alicia Martínez (Antigua), rural woman Asunción Alonso Viera (La Oliva), livestock entrepreneur from Toto, Teresa del Pino Hernández Ramos (Pájara), María Jesús Rodríguez Vera (Puerto del Rosario), and Carmen Delia Suález Peña (Tuineje), president of the Asociación de Productores del Campo Majorero.
The awards were presented by the president of the Cabildo, Lola García, the councillor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Enrique Pérez, the first deputy mayor of Antigua, Joana Verde, the director general of Livestock, Andrés Díaz Matoso, and the area’s councillors Jonathan Peña (Tuineje), Rubén González (La Oliva), David de León (Puerto del Rosario) and José Díaz (Pájara).
For Lola García, “it is important to acknowledge the work of so many women who have devoted their lives to supporting their families, working the land and keeping our traditions alive, and to do so in a place so closely linked to our history as Betancuria. A history that has been built through the daily work of women.”
The event also featured musical performances by Domingo Saavedra and Marey Martín on piano and vocals respectively, in the warm company of neighbours, friends and family of those honoured.
