CEIP Poeta Domingo Velázquez has carried out a project based on Project Based Learning (PBL) in which students in 5th and 6th grade have explored and solved various problems leading to a “Smart City” by applying computational thinking and using innovative tools such as Lego Spike Essential, Wedo and Makey Makey, all with an awareness of the use of recycled material in order to find sustainable solutions to environmental problems.

The inclusion of this project with the Child Friendly City (CAI) has allowed the students to lead a project whose final product was presented at the Plenary of the Council of Children and Adolescents on May 20, as well as the promotion of participation and strengthening of active and committed children as people with full rights. In addition, thanks to the existence of the CAI, it has been possible to link this initiative with the political part in the knowledge of the project elaborated by the students and the delivery of proposals for a sustainable and better communicated Puerto del Rosario.

Two innovative experiences have been carried out through home automation. On the one hand, the creation of a “City 15 minutes” where not only has been analyzed if Puerto del Rosario meets the criterion of having essential services for any citizen within 15 minutes but also developing a series of proposals based on real alternatives to improve sustainability and urban intelligence and on the other hand, the creation of a leisure and free time park that allows the population entertainment and enjoyment, as well as the city to be a source of entrepreneurship that generates wealth to the economy of the municipality.

The presentation ceremony on June 6 was attended by the mayor, David de Vera, and councilors of Education, Mobility, Environment and Transport, who showed their gratitude and enthusiasm for a student body committed to improving the municipality from an early age and from a perspective of research, dialogue and participation.

The follow-up of these proposals will be evaluated at the next Plenary Session of the Council for Children and Adolescents on November 20.
