The competition’s second edition, dedicated to the myths and legends of Fuerteventura, hands out €1,500 in prizes and accepts entries until 13 November.

The Fuerteventura Film Commission, headed by councillor Nereida Calero, in collaboration with majorera production company Árida Films, has released «Anatomía de una bruja» («Anatomy of a Witch»), a short film outside the official selection with a clear aim: to encourage residents, creators and enthusiasts to take part in the 2nd Fuerteventura Film Commission Short Film Festival, whose edition this year is dedicated to the myths and legends of Fuerteventura.

The short film is available at: https://youtu.be/YtvEb6bMDes

A short film shot on a mobile phone

«Anatomía de una bruja» draws on the myth of the witches of Tindaya, one of the best-known legends in majorera oral tradition. According to the story, on moonlit nights the island’s witches would gather on top of the sacred mountain to dance and fly to America, returning before dawn. They were also said to be responsible for the footprint-shaped carvings found at the summit.

The film was shot entirely on a mobile phone at natural outdoor locations across Fuerteventura. The choice was deliberate: the organisers wanted to show that anyone can make a short film with the resources they have to hand, without big crews or budgets, and that the island’s landscape is a film set in its own right.

Myths and legends: the island’s oral heritage on screen

The festival aims to showcase Fuerteventura’s literary and oral heritage: apparitions, witches, giants and tales of its mountains and kings, passed down by word of mouth for generations. Besides the witches of Tindaya, the organisers suggest as starting points the light of Mafasca and the giants Guise and Ayose, although any popular story from the island is welcome.

This second edition follows the success of the first, dedicated to the Virgen de la Peña, Fuerteventura’s patron saint. That call brought together several short films by island creators. The competition succeeded in bringing one of the island’s most cherished traditions to audiences through very different perspectives, and cemented the festival’s place as a fixture on the majorero audiovisual calendar.

Prizes and how to enter

The festival is awarding €1,500 in prizes, decided by a jury of three audiovisual and cultural professionals:

  • First prize: trophy, certificate and €1,000.
  • Second prize: certificate and €300.
  • Third prize: certificate and €200.

All participants will receive a certificate of participation. Amounts are gross.

Anyone may enter, regardless of age or place of residence, with no limit on the number of works per author. Entrants under 18 require authorisation from a parent or legal guardian.

Entries must not exceed 15 minutes, including credits, and must be in Spanish or subtitled in Spanish. The recommended resolution is 1080p. Format, style and year of production are open.

Entry is free and is made via the form at aridafilms.com/festival, providing a viewing link (YouTube, Vimeo or Drive) accessible without requesting permission. The deadline closes on 13 November 2026 at 11.59pm (Canary Islands time). Full terms and conditions are available on the festival’s website.
