More than thirty vessels from across the Archipelago will compete on 24, 25 and 31 October and 1 November in Puerto del Rosario
Over the next two weeks, the bay of Puerto del Rosario will become the epicentre of Canarian latin-sail boating, hosting the 35th Canary Islands Barquillos de Vela Latina de 5 Metros Championship. The event will bring together barquillos from across the archipelago that qualified in their respective island competitions.
Up to eight races (two per day) will be held on 24, 25 and 31 October and 1 November, with the participation of 31 barquillos from across the Archipelago: eight from Lanzarote, four from La Graciosa, nine from Gran Canaria and eight from Fuerteventura.
The presentation, held at the Centro de Arte Juan Ismael in Puerto del Rosario, was attended by the president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Lola García; the Canary Islands Government’s director-general for Native Sports, Lorena Hernández; and the island’s Sports Councillor, Luis González. Also present were councillors David de León, from Puerto del Rosario, and Gleiber Carreño, from La Oliva, as well as Juan Monzón, Sports Councillor for the Cabildo de Lanzarote.
Latin-sail boating was represented by the president of the Canary Islands Federation of Barquillos de Vela Latina Canaria, Luis Toledo, and the president of the Fuerteventura Island Federation of Barquillos, José Pascual Perdomo, as host, together with representatives of the participating clubs.
For the president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Lola García, “latin-sail boating is more alive than ever on the majorera island. Over the coming weeks we will witness a top-level competition in a sport that is so important to our islands.” She also praised the excellent work carried out by the Canary Islands Federation in organising the event, as well as by the Island Federation, “which has not only managed to increase participation in this discipline, but has done so while also growing female participation and nurturing young talent to continue passing on the values of this sport.”
The Canary Islands Government’s director-general for Native Sports, Lorena Hernández, thanked the federations and institutions involved and highlighted the growth in female participation. “It is a source of pride to have a women’s team from each of the participating islands, and we will keep working to ensure this tradition is not lost,” she said.
Representing Puerto del Rosario Town Council, Councillor David de León thanked the federations and clubs for their involvement in holding the competition in the capital’s bay. “We wish all the participants the best of luck and hope the weather holds up so everyone can enjoy the races in the best possible conditions,” he said.
The president of the Canary Islands Federation of Barquillos de Vela Latina, Luis Toledo, highlighted the sporting and cultural value of the championship, now in its thirty-fifth edition. “It is an opportunity for our sportsmen and women to compete with the best and to keep our culture and identity alive, especially among young people,” he said.
Meanwhile, the president of the Island Federation, Pascual Perdomo, expressed his satisfaction that Fuerteventura is once again hosting the championship and thanked the island’s institutions and clubs for their support. “We are very proud to hold this championship in Fuerteventura once again this year and to continue counting on the participation of our clubs and sportspeople,” he said.
