The Mayor of Antigua, Juan Cabrera, welcomes the progress made and the willingness shown by the regional department to move forward with an infrastructure project the municipality needs and which has been left unfinished for years.
The Mayor of Antigua, Juan Cabrera, and the Councillor for Education, Sebastiana Verde, met this summer with the Canary Islands Government’s Minister for Education, Poli Suárez, who indicated that works are expected to resume by the end of this year and be completed between March and April 2027.
The Mayor of Antigua, Juan Cabrera, and the Councillor for Education, Sebastiana Verde, held a working meeting this summer with the Canary Islands Government’s Minister for Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sport, Poli Suárez, to discuss the situation regarding Antigua’s Nursery School, among other matters of interest to the municipality.
During the meeting, the minister explained that the works, which began in 2025, had to be halted due to problems that arose with the contracted company. This situation required the relevant administrative procedures to be carried out before work could resume.
With this situation now resolved, the Canary Islands Government is working on re-awarding the contract for the works. According to the timeline provided by the department during the meeting, work could resume by the end of 2026 and be completed between March and April 2027.

“We are talking about a service our families need and an infrastructure project that cannot keep waiting. The Ayuntamiento will work with the Canary Islands Government to help move the paperwork forward so that the works can resume as soon as possible,” said the mayor.
For her part, the Councillor for Education, Sebastiana Verde, stressed that “since we took on this responsibility, we have wanted to find out first-hand the real situation of the Nursery School and, above all, what solution was going to be adopted. The meeting with the minister allowed us to learn about the steps being taken and to have a timeline for the resumption and completion of the works.”
Verde added that “we will keep a close eye on this matter because we know how important it is for the families of Antigua. After so many years of waiting, what really matters now is that the works resume, are completed, and that the Nursery School can finally open its doors.”
Antigua Town Council will continue to coordinate with the Canary Islands Government’s Department of Education and to monitor the necessary procedures to move forward with the completion of this educational infrastructure.
