La Oliva Town Council, through its Tourism and Environment department led by David Fajardo, is organising a free awareness workshop on Community and Home Composting as part of the BIO ECO-TUR project, funded through the Interreg MAC Programme. The event will take place on 11 September, from 5.00pm to 7.00pm, at the Raíz del Pueblo Cultural Association, located at Calle Francisco Fuentes Martín, 11, in La Oliva.
The workshop aims to introduce residents to the benefits of composting and highlight the importance of using organic waste as a resource, helping to reduce waste generation and promote more sustainable models for managing organic matter.
The session will explore how soil functions as a living ecosystem, as well as the role microorganisms play in transforming organic waste into valuable resources. It will also explain how organic matter can begin a new life cycle through composting.
Participants will also learn about the benefits organic matter brings to soil, including improved water retention, greater fertility and healthier plant growth.
With this in mind, the workshop aims to bring composting into the home, showing that anyone can start composting with basic knowledge and simple materials. It will also highlight community composting as a tool for fostering collaboration, learning and civic commitment to the environment.
The mayor of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco, stressed the need to continue backing initiatives of this kind, helping to raise awareness of home and community composting and thereby contribute to sustainable education.
Meanwhile, the councillor for Tourism and Environment, David Fajardo, encouraged residents of the municipality to take part in this initiative to discover how small everyday actions can help close the natural cycle of organic matter and move the municipality towards greater sustainability.
