The Betancuria City Council initiates a project with the young people of the municipality. The students of the schools of the municipality of Betancuria, CEIP Alcaldesa Amparo Torres and CEIP Gumersindo Martell, enjoyed this Tuesday, October 22, an excursion to the Interpretation Center Battles of El Cuchillete and Tamasite in Tuineje.
The objective was to raise awareness and understanding of two important historical events that took place in Fuerteventura in 1740: The Battles of El Cuchillete and Tamasite, when the English corsairs assaulted the town of Tuineje, and were proudly defeated by the militias of the island, made up of residents of the villages in the area, who fought bravely armed with stones, sticks and with the help of camels.
Since then, every year during these dates the victories are celebrated commemorating the battles in the Fiestas Juradas de San Miguel Arcángel, which have acquired such historical, social and cultural relevance, that they have the highest recognition: Festivities of National Tourist Interest, in addition to the cataloging as Cultural Interest (BIC) and Regional Tourist Interest with which it already had previously.
Undoubtedly, a day full of cultural feeling, identity and living history of Fuerteventura.
