The general director of Fisheries and the president of the island corporation met today with representatives of the three fishermen’s guilds of the island to discuss the situation of the sector in the current campaign, as well as the works to improve the fishing infrastructure.
The general director
of Fisheries of the Canary Islands Government, Esteban Reyes, and the president of the Cabildo
of Fuerteventura, Lola Garcia, held Thursday, July 10,
meetings with the three fishermen’s guilds of the island
-Corralejo, Gran Tarajal and Morro Jable- to address the needs of
sector and plan the implementation of a series of actions to improve its
facilities. These meetings were also attended by representatives of the
municipalities of La Oliva, Tuineje and Pájara, municipalities where
these entities are located.
In this regard,
Reyes stressed “the importance of inter-administrative collaboration and the
direct dialogue with the fishermen’s guilds to know first
hand the demands of professionals in this sector and to offer them an effective support
through actions to improve infrastructure or
other additional measures that contribute to the maintenance and development of the
fishing activity in the Canary Islands”.
For her part, Lola
Garcia stressed that “from the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, we always stand on the side of
professionals majorera traditional fishing. Therefore, they are key
such coordination meetings between administrations and
guilds, to meet the demands in terms of infrastructure, so
that favors a traditional practice that is also one of the
economic activities more rooted in Fuerteventura”.
In the first
meeting of the day, with representatives of the Fishermen’s Guild of
Corralejo, the execution of the asphalting works of the fishing area
of El Cotillo was planned, in addition to checking the state of the pontoons of this area
port, object of some improvement actions recently carried out by the
Directorate General of Fisheries and Canary Ports.
Then, in the
meeting with the Fishermen’s Guild of Gran Tarajal, it was agreed to expand
the main building of the headquarters of this entity to house the trucks of
fish distribution and, thus, to release a marketing area in
the facilities, an action to be carried out by the Canary Islands Government.
Finally, together with
the members of the Morro Jable Fishermen’s Guild verified the
result of the roofing works, carried out by the Autonomous Executive in
collaboration with the City Council of Pájara, in a fish transit area,
to facilitate the daily tasks of the fishermen and their development in a more comfortable
way, as well as the improvements made to the electrical installation.
In addition to the
corresponding actions in the infrastructure of each guild, during
the day were discussed other issues of interest to the sector on the island, as
the state of catches in the current campaign compared to the previous one, both
in the case of tuna and other species; the situation of shipowners and
sailors; or the agreement of transfer of Ports, among other issues.
