At noon on Monday, May 26th, the presentation of the elaboration of a Plan for the Extension of Coverage and Improvement of Fixed Broadband Services (fiber optics) in the municipality of Puerto del Rosario, focused on rural areas that currently lack connectivity, took place at the capital city hall.
This plan aims to provide stable and high quality internet access to improve the quality of life of the neighbors and reduce the digital divide that affects rural areas. The implementation of this project responds to a social and strategic demand aimed at digital inclusion, territorial cohesion and modernization of municipal services.
The presentation was made by Carlos Couros, dean of the Telecommunications Association of the Canary Islands.
For the mayor, David de Vera, “we continue working to reach all the towns and neighborhoods of the municipality, and to provide better communications services to our neighbors, where Internet access is a useful tool for any need that is demanded, being the first council of the Canary Islands to carry out this initiative”.
The Councilor for New Technologies, Rosa Rodríguez, stated that “although this is a long process at an administrative and technical level, our objective is to continue improving the extension of coverage and the improvement of the service, so that New Technologies are within everyone’s reach”.
The need for this project is justified by the evident digital divide in the rural areas of Puerto del Rosario, which affects the quality of life of residents and limits their opportunities in areas such as education, employment, healthcare and e-government.
