The Cabildo of Fuerteventura and ADIVIA promote a distinctive that recognizes and accompanies establishments in their transformation as inclusive spaces.

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has presented the Seal of Quality in Universal Accessibility ‘José Gómez’, an initiative promoted by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, from the Department of Accessibility, and the association ADIVIA. A tool that was created with the aim of distinguishing establishments for public use that make an effort and meet the requirements in terms of universal accessibility, as well as accompany them in their transformation as inclusive spaces. This distinction bears the name of José Gómez, an insular reference in the defense of the rights of people with disabilities and founder of ADIVIA.

At the event, the president of the Cabildo, Lola Garcia, put in value an initiative “very necessary for Fuerteventura, with a seal aimed at people can participate in social, economic and labor life on equal terms” “Accessibility is not a whim, it is a right. Therefore, we must continue working to make Fuerteventura a land of equality for all people”.

The Councilor for Accessibility, Carmen Alonso has highlighted “the great step we are taking within the social commitment of the Cabildo to make Fuerteventura an inclusive territory for all people”. In this sense, Alonso encouraged “stores, restaurants, services and public spaces of all kinds to join this network, which will not only distinguish them as inclusive establishments, but will receive advice when it comes to removing barriers that hinder the daily lives of people with disabilities”.

On behalf of ADIVIA, its president, Alicia Roger, said that “we are very proud to have been awarded the seal to José Gómez. I think that, wherever he is, will be very happy. She also thanked “the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and Mari Carmen especially, because without their help this would have been impossible. Roger also expressed his satisfaction with the island’s involvement, especially the municipality of Puerto del Rosario, “although there are still many others that we hope will gradually join.” “At first we were afraid that, after the disappearance of José Gómez, this project would sink, but that has not been the case. The ship is still afloat and we want to continue growing,” she concluded excitedly.

For his part, the manager of ADIVIA, Juan Carlos Placeres, stressed that “this project was born from the tenacity of José Gómez, with the intention of achieving a more accessible and inclusive Fuerteventura. Today, finally, it sees the light”. Placeres thanked “the support of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through the Department of Accessibility and the counselor Carmen Alonso, who from the first moment bet on this initiative and have made it a reality”.

During the presentation day, the operation, evaluation process and the steps for any establishment to adhere to the seal were explained. The activity included personal testimonials, a discussion table and a final space for direct advice so that attendees can opt for the seal.

The social worker of ADIVIA and the José Gómez Center, Cristina Cabrera, the psychologist of the center, Nahiraki Rodríguez, and the accessibility advisor, Carlos Hernández, intervened. Also present were the councilors Evangelina Sánchez (Pájara), Guiseppe Sigonorino (Antigua) and Pedro Rodríguez (Tuineje).

Interested persons can obtain more information by scanning the QR code on the official poster of the event, writing to selloaccesibilidadjosegomez@gmail.com, or calling 616 827 333 (ADIVIA).
