The City Council of Puerto del Rosario held on Tuesday, July 1, an important coordination meeting with the Director General of Cultural Heritage of the Canary Islands Government, Miguel Angel Clavijo, the president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Lola Garcia, the Minister of Cultural Heritage of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Rayco de Leon, the councilman of Historical Heritage of the capital consistory, David de Leon, the Councillor for Urban Planning, Ana Hernandez, as well as the technical team and the drafting team of the municipal catalog of heritage.

The main objective of this working meeting was to strengthen coordination between the three administrations involved to ensure the protection and conservation of the historical heritage of the municipality, following the recent initial approval of the Municipal Catalog for the Protection of Cultural Heritage Assets of Puerto del Rosario.

The mayor of Puerto del Rosario, David de Vera, stressed that “this is a decisive step to coordinate efforts and actions that allow the new conservation instrument, as is the Catalog, lay the groundwork for establishing collaborative strategies with owners and citizens. We want the heritage value to be a fundamental axis of the urban development of Puerto del Rosario”.

For her part, the president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Lola Garcia, emphasized the importance of going hand in hand: “it is key to join forces so that the protection of heritage is not a brake, but an opportunity to promote the identity and attractiveness of our municipalities”.

The Director General of Cultural Heritage of the Government of the Canary Islands, Miguel Ángel Clavijo, underlined the relevance of this type of instrument: “the approval of the municipal catalog is an essential tool for the heritage to be preserved with guarantees and to be harmoniously integrated into urban planning. The coordinated work between administrations is the best way to protect our legacy”.

From the municipal level, the councilman of Historical Heritage, David de León, said: “the involvement of all parties is vital. We are not only talking about protecting buildings, but also about preserving the memory and history of Puerto del Rosario for future generations”.

In the same vein, the Councilor for Urban Planning, Ana Hernandez, stressed the need to align heritage protection with planning: “the catalog initially approved is an instrument that allows us to define precisely what values should be preserved and how to integrate them into the evolution of the city”.

Finally, the Minister of Cultural Heritage of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Rayco de Leon said that “coordination between the Cabildo, Canary Islands Government and City Council is the way to make effective a real and effective protection of heritage, combining conservation, responsible use and enhancement”.

With the initial approval of the catalog and this new coordinated impulse, Puerto del Rosario takes a firm step towards the consolidation of a responsible and participatory heritage policy, where protection and conservation become key elements for the present and future development of the municipality.
