The guided walks will explore these areas of high historical and archaeological value on 31 October and 7 November respectively
The Cabildo de Fuerteventura continues to bring the island’s cultural heritage closer to residents through the ‘Paisajes con Historia’ (‘Landscapes with History’) programme, which is adding two new heritage routes to explore sites of special historical and archaeological interest. The next outings will take place on Saturday 31 October, with a walk from Betancuria to Morro del Humilladero, and on 7 November, with a route through the Tinojay ravine in the municipality of La Oliva.
The island councillor for Cultural Heritage, Rayco León, highlighted the importance of this type of initiative in encouraging greater knowledge and conservation of Fuerteventura’s rich heritage. “These routes allow us to discover our history on the ground, get to know better the places that form part of our identity, and understand the importance of protecting them for future generations,” he said.
From Betancuria to Morro del Humilladero
The first route will take place this Saturday, 31 October, from 9.00am to 1.00pm, and is of medium difficulty. The itinerary will set off from Betancuria’s historic centre, taking in some of its most representative sites, such as the Church of Santa María, the Convent of San Buenaventura and the Hermitage of San Diego.
Before continuing towards the Morro del Humilladero archaeological site, participants will stop at the Archaeological Museum to learn more about Fuerteventura’s indigenous population. The final stretch will reveal this site and its rock engravings, including several podomorphs (foot-shaped carvings), offering insight into the value of this archaeological legacy.
Registration is now open via the website www.patrimoniofuerteventura.com. To make travel easier, the Cabildo will provide a bus service from Morro Jable, Gran Tarajal, Tuineje, Antigua, Corralejo, La Oliva and Puerto del Rosario.
The Tinojay ravine takes centre stage in the second route
The second route will take place on Saturday 7 November, also from 9.00am to 1.00pm, and is of medium difficulty. The walk will explore the Tinojay ravine, a site of archaeological interest known for its distinctive boat-shaped rock engravings — carvings resembling vessels that make the site an exceptional place to get closer to graphic expressions from the past.
During the visit, participants will learn about the historical and cultural value of these engravings, as well as the importance of preserving and protecting them as part of the island’s archaeological heritage.
Registration will open on 26 October at www.patrimoniofuerteventura.com. In this case, a bus service will run from Gran Tarajal, Tuineje, Antigua and Puerto del Rosario.
With these two new routes, the ‘Paisajes con Historia’ programme continues to promote awareness of Fuerteventura’s heritage through guided walks that connect the island’s history, culture and landscapes.
